报告内容:
Radical polymerization is among the most widely used polymerizations in both laboratories and industries because of a wide variety of polymerizable monomers and robustness, whereas its control has been considered difficult due to the highly reactive and neutral growing radical species. However, there have been great developments in controlled/living radical polymerizations, where the dormant covalent species at the chain end is reversibly activated into the growing radical species by appropriate stimulus, such as heat, metal catalyst, radical species, etc. These living radical polymerizations have enabled the control of polymer molecular weights and the synthesis of well-defined polymers, such as end-functionalized, block, graft, and star polymers. In spite of these developments, monomer sequence control is still one of the most challenging topics for synthetic polymer chemists. Another important issue in polymer science and industry is an effective utilization of renewable resources for polymeric materials from environmental viewpoints.
This lecture will introduce our recent results related to these topics. For monomer sequence control, we have been using two approaches in radical polymerization. One is based on the modulation of monomer reactivity by fluoroalcohol as a solvent in radical copolymerization of polar acrylic monomers and nonpolar olefins, where the fluoroalcohol interacts with the carbonyl group to increase the copolymerizability. This method is effective for an efficient radical copolymerization of a renewable nonpolar olefin, limonene, with maleimide to give the 1:2 sequence-regulated polymers. Another approach is a metal-catalyzed step-growth radical polymerization of designed monomers consisting of sequence-regulated vinyl monomer units.
